D23: The Official Fan Club announced a new lineup of events Sunday, including a celebration planned to mark the 20th anniversary of Disney's Animal Kingdom.
Details of the special in-park event haven't been released, but it will take place in April, according to the Disney Parks Blog. The news was announced as Disney fans and leaders are fresh off the 35th anniversary of Epcot.
As if it were even possible, it looks like we're going to get more cuteness at Disney's Animal Kingdom thanks to a special pregnancy at the park.
Sohni, one of two Sumatran tigers in the park's care, is pregnant with cubs, according to the Disney Parks Blog. The birth is expected to happen sometime this month.
There are less than 500 Sumatran tigers left in the wild and the Disney Conservation Fund is working with partners like the Wildlife Conservation Society to help reduce the ongoing decline of gorgeous animals like Sohni.
Specifically, the Society's Reverse the Decline initiative aims to increase the wild population of Sumatran tigers by 25 percent in the next decades. To date, DCF has provided nearly $2.5 million to protect tigers and their habitats.
Sohni and her mate Malosi (a pair who can be seen along the Maharajah Jungle Trek in Animal Kingdom) were chosen to breed through the Species Survival Plan. The program, which is overseen by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, ensures responsible breeding of critically endangered species.
Such happy news for Disney and animal lovers alike! Disney hasn't said how many cubs will be born, but we suspect a grand announcement from the mouse house when the big day arrives.
After closing for refurbishment earlier this year, Mission: Space will reopen next month, according to Disney officials.
The ride has been undergoing updates to refresh the mission to Mars and add a more child-friendly Green track (the less-intense mission), Disney announced at the D23 Expo Saturday.
And that's not all the works around that ride. Walt Disney Imagineers Tom Fitzgerald said a new restaurant will open adjacent to the ride.
"We know our guests love dining at Epcot -- and the restaurants really are out of this world," said Fitzgerald. "Now we're about to create one that takes that literally."
The restaurant, which wasn't named Saturday, will be operated by the Patina Restaurant Group, which also operates Tutto Italia and Via Napoli in Epcot's Italy pavilion. It also runs Morimoto Asia in Disney Springs, the resort's shopping and entertainment complex formerly known as Downtown Disney.
No opening date was announced for the new restaurant.
Orlando's most famous street is on track for a slight makeover.
Main Street U.S.A. at Magic Kingdom is getting a new theater, said Bob Chapek, chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts.
Chapek announced the coming update at the D23 Expo in Anaheim Saturday.
"Across Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, we've been upping the game in entertainment with shows like Frozen Live at the Hyperion," said Chapek. "It's been a huge hit at Disneyland Resort, and I'm sure many of you have seen it. This new theater at Walt Disney World continues that stream by bringing a new venue for world-class venue for world-class entertainment to the world's biggest park."
The theater's design is based on the Willis Wood theater in 1920s Kansas City, where Walt Disney himself once lived, said Chapek.
No information about an opening date or what show will be housed there was released Saturday.
