Welcome to the first post in a new series here at Orlando Everyday, Off Property. As you can tell, Orlando Everyday posts tend to focus on the region's main tourism attractions with an emphasis on Walt Disney World.
In this new series, Orlando Everyday will highlight the latest and greatest tourism news that happens outside the theme parks.
In today's edition, Orlando Everyday heads to Ripley's Believe It or Not! on International Drive, which is currently hosting the dress Marilyn Monroe wore when she famously sang "Happy Birthday, Mr. President" to John F. Kennedy in 1962.
Ripley's set a Guinness World Record for the most expensive dress sold at auction when the company purchased the dress in November 2016. The company snapped it up from Julien's Auctions for a cool $4.8 million. Once you tack on fees, the dress cost more than $5 million to acquire.
The dress went on display at the I-Drive Ripley's location on Nov. 9 and will stay in Orlando for a limited engagement, leaving after the new year, according to the company.
"This is the most famous item of clothing in twentieth-century culture," said Edward Meyer, VP of Exhibits & Archives for Ripley's Believe It or Not!. "It has the significance of Marilyn, of JFK, and of American politics."
The dress is on display with other items from Kennedy's birthday gala and other Marilyn memorabilia.
Extending the celebration of all things Marilyn, the Orlando Ripley's location will host various events throughout December. On Dec. 2, the attraction will host an award-winning Marilyn Monroe impersonator from 11 a.m.-4 p.m.
On Dec. 9, starting at 6 p.m., they are hosting a Marilyn Monroe look-alike contest, with a grand prize of $500, lifetime passes to Ripley Entertainment Attractions, Ripley's merchandise and a two-night stay on Clearwater Beach. (Guests can register for that contest online)
Rounding out December's offerings is free outdoor screenings of some of Marilyn Monroe's classic films. The schedule for that is as follows:
Dec. 2, at 7 p.m.: Gentlemen Prefer Blondes
Dec. 9 at 8 p.m.: Some Like It Hot
Dec. 16 at 7 p.m.: Seven-Year Itch
